Mercia Marina was delighted to be involved with an awards ceremony to celebrate community work carried out by volunteers, voluntary groups and local businesses in South Derbyshire.
The South Derbyshire Community Awards is now in its second year and was organised by local charity South Derbyshire CVS and Swadlincote & District Chamber of Trade, with sponsorship from eight local businesses including Mercia Marina.
A panel, made up of the award sponsors, met to consider all the nominations and agree the shortlist and winners. There were 55 nominations and the three nominees shortlisted for each category were invited to the awards.
Mercia Marina sponsored the Team of the Year category and the winner was Ticknall Luncheon Club Team.
Tony Preston, Sales and Marketing Manager at Mercia Marina, attended the ceremony to present the award.
He said: “Mercia is very proud to sponsor this category as we hold volunteers in the highest regard within the marina and local community. Without the volunteer teams for wildlife and nature we would not have such biodiversity at the marina, let alone the awards for conservation, encouraging bees and planting wildflower meadows or creating wildlife habitat. Without the volunteer first aiders team, some 10 members of the community, well you can imagine their value, people owe their health or even life to them being there when needed most. Those who volunteer to litter pick, the teams who teach groups crafts, art and photography and keep the local community entertained. The volunteer teams that take the elderly and frail or those without transport to medical appointments.
“All the nominees are very deserved winners and each team has put a tremendous effort back into the community. It is truly moving to hear what they have done for their communities and see them enjoy a perfectly organised evening where the focus is on them to have a fun evening. We will certainly be sponsoring this category again.”
